St. Peters Reminds Residents to Ask for City-Issued Credentials from Solicitors
This time of year we often hear of scam artists going door-to-door to sell products or services that may not exist. Although many solicitors are from legitimate organizations or businesses, some are not. The City of St. Peters reminds residents that if anyone comes to your door trying to sell you something or to take orders for future delivery, to make sure the person has a current City of St. Peters Peddlers/Solicitors license.
Organizations that go door-to-door to solicit sales of merchandise or orders for services in St. Peters must have a current City of St. Peters Peddlers/Solicitors license. The license must be carried at all times. Photo identification that has been approved or provided by the City containing the solicitor’s name and the name of the organization, corporation, association or group they represent, must also be presented before requesting anything from the occupant.
If a solicitor comes to your door, you should ask to see their license and photo identification. If they don’t have one, send them on their way and call the police at 636.278.2222. Tell the dispatcher that an unlicensed solicitor is going door-to-door in your neighborhood.
While many of the solicitors who visit our neighborhoods are legitimate, some people do not want to be disturbed by them. The City of St. Peters provides residents with a weatherproof card to exhibit near their home’s main entrance to indicate that they do not want to be disturbed by solicitors. Posting of this “No Solicitors Invited” notice serves as sufficient notice to any peddler/solicitor that they are not welcome. Any solicitors, whether licensed or not, must immediately and peacefully leave your premises or be guilty of a misdemeanor.
St. Peters residents can obtain the “No Solicitors Invited” card at the front desk of St. Peters City Hall. For more information on obtaining a Peddlers/Solicitors license, call 636.278.2244 or 636.477.6600.
