Therapeutic Horsemanship…Focusing on Abilities Since 1975
_________
Therapeutic Horsemanship is seeking volunteers to support its riders with disabilities participating in the organization’s equine assisted therapy programs. Therapeutic Horsemanship is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization located in St. Charles County and is nationally accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). Therapeutic Horsemanship (TH) has provided award-winning equestrian therapy programs for people with disabilities in St. Louis, St. Charles, Lincoln County, and surrounding areas since 1975.
Monica Marsh, volunteer director at Therapeutic Horsemanship, has been expanding the volunteer program for the last year. “I am continually amazed at the dedication and energy our volunteers bring to our program. Without our volunteers, we couldn’t provide the quality of service to our riders required for them to successfully meet their therapeutic goals.”
“It is a rewarding experience to be involved in a therapy program for children,” says John Finch, TH volunteer from University City for the past 10 years.
Available volunteer opportunities include working directly with the clients on horseback as a sidewalker or leader. In addition, there are volunteer work days for individuals or groups to contribute their time and energy on facility and grounds projects. Volunteer shifts are available during the day, in the evenings and on Saturdays. The minimum age for volunteering is 14. “Many of our younger volunteers are high school students earning community service hours for their school requirements,” adds Marsh.
Marsh further states “To provide this labor-intensive therapy, we need three volunteers for each of our riders. This adds up to more than 250 volunteers, many of whom have been supporting our riders for years, in any given session. Because people’s schedules are constantly changing, we are always in need of additional volunteers. No experience is necessary – we will train you on site.”
Anyone over 14 years old interested in volunteering should call Monica Marsh. She will answer your questions and get you registered for volunteer training. Monica can be reached at (636) 332-4940 or at volunteer@thstl.org.
